   East Vračar

Slavija Hotel was constructed between 1882 and 1888 on the project of engineer František Nekvasil, in the area which was then on the edge of the city. It was named after the idea of pan-slavism which was very popular at the time, so even several shops around there were carrying the same name. It was a three-star hotel and belonged to Ljuba Krsmanović in the late 19th century. On the square we can also see a newspaper kiosk which, as it seems, inspired the design of Belgrade kiosks in the decades to come. In 1904, in Belgrade 16 political magazines were published, as well as 19 vocational, 6 literature, 6 pedagogic, 4 army, 3 satirical, 2 for children etc.

One of the most commonly used expressions for the big changes in the period between the two world wars was — modernisation. Belgrade citizens wanted to include everything they considered modern and European into their daily life. On the left side of the postcard we can see the advertisement board of the Tucović printing house, which was located in Mackenzie’s Street nr. 3. It announced that we accept all printing jobs: printing of books, newspapers, magazines, letters, envelopes, and all other orders which are part of printing profession.

The busy summer atmosphere that ruled over previously tranquil streets was depicted in detail by Mata Milošević in his memories: When the summer sun sets, the heat is gone, and freshness comes, the street comes alive. First, the road in front of each house is sprinkled with water and cleaned. It was so pleasant in the light shade after the water cooled down the hot stone surface of the road. When everything is done, the house chores finished, and the street cleaned, women take out their little stools and sit down in front of their houses, or join a neighbour, and then, probably, their most enjoyable part of the day starts.
