The Belgrade Fortress and the Kalemegdan

Belgrade fortress is a complex which contains the Upper and Lower towns. To the south of it is the park Kalemegdan, once an empty field. The complex of the Belgrade fortress was continuously constructed throughout two millennia, and within it there are remains from pre-historic times, as well as from the fortified Roman Castrum, buildings from the Middle Ages, and reconstructions from the 18th century. The upper walls round the plateau of the Upper Town, were built during the major construction period in 15th century, at the time of Despot Stefan Lazarević.

When the field of the Lower Town was levelled between 1723 and 1736, the arsenal building, artillery barracks, bakery, and two food storage buildings were constructed there.

The construction of infantry barracks also began, but it was never completed.

In the late 1920s the Sava footpath was enlarged over the demolished outer fortification of the south-western fort wall. Idyllic spaces for walks were created, but the authenticity of the walls was damaged. In time, its huge importance and the need for its preservation became clear, as the fortress on the hill above the Sava confluence was the biggest and the most significant memorial complex of Belgrade.
