А Walk Down Prince Mihailo’s Street

The Street of Prince Mihailo straddles the ridge running at the altitude of 115 metres and it acts as a watershed. Down its steeper slope waters run into the Sava, and down the less steep slope into the Danube. Early civilisations left their marks in the vicinity of this street. Its modern day direction runs approximately down the axis of the old Roman Singidunum.

Prince Mihailo‘s Street was paved with wooden blocks along its entire length. Walking over the wooden surface must have been an especially pleasant experience. When the decision was made in 1909 to cover the street with wood, in the whole of Europe only Paris had similar wood-surfaced streets, as well as Budapest in the area around the Opera.
