First postcards most often had free compositions of landscapes, buildings, as well as people who almost always wore their national costumes. The drawings were rather naïve and clumsy, but they were certainly attractive at the time. They are important in the history of illustrated postcards, but they have no special value when researching the appearance of old Belgrade.
'There are five printing houses in Belgrade: one is state owned, and four are private; there are three lithographic companies as well: one state owned, and two private. Along with other publications, eight newspapers are published in Belgrade today, some political and some about literature or vocational'. This report on publishing and printing activity in Belgrade, was written by Milan Đ. Milićević in 1876.
