  The Palilula Quarter

As suggested by the great Serbian botanist Josif Pančić, the ministry of education founded in 1874 the Principality’s Botanical Garden within the Great School. Originally, there was an attempt to create the garden near the Danube bank in Dorćol, but after two major floods destroyed almost completely the plant collection which Pančić worked hard to gather, this location was abandoned. In August 1889, king Milan donated to the Great School a piece of land which he had inherited from his grandfather Jevrem, Prince Miloš’s brother, with the only condition that the Royal Botanical Garden be named Jevremovac. The work on the garden started in 1890 when the ground was flattened and the seedlings were planted, and soon the glasshouse was constructed.

In 1928, the first student hall in the Balkans was opened in Belgrade. The project of the large academism style building was designed by Russian architects Georgije Kovaljevski and Viktor Lukomski. The hall had a capacity for about 500 students and the construction was partially financed by the funds of King Aleksandar Karađorđević. At the time, the Belgrade University had 177 professors and more than 6,000 students.
