Belgrade impresses travellers who pass through it, mostly because of its outstanding position. From the top of the hill, protected by the great rivers, for thousands of years it watched over the endless lowlands surrounding it. The promontory above the confluence was suitable for building a fortification, which was its main feature throughout its history.
The Orthodox cathedral dominates panoramic views taken from the Sava. The church of St. Michael Archangel was first mentioned in 1578. Travel writer Gerlach wrote about it on his return from Constantinople when he visited ' humble, but spacious church of the poor Serbs' on the Sava hillside of the Belgrade town.
