   The Serbian Varoš

The first modern granite cobblestone street, replacing the Turkish cobblestone, was introduced in 1886 in the part of Dubrovačka Street from the cathedral towards Prince Mihailo’s Street, which was also paved soon after. Just like other cobblestone streets, this one was also bumpy, contrary to the meaning of the originally Greek word kaldrma — nice road. Downhill from the National Bank building was the office of the Twentieth century magazine.

The original structure of the National Bank building was enlarged between 1922 and 1925 upon the project of Konstantin Jovanović, after which it covered the block between the streets of Tsar Lazar, Gračanička, King Petar and Nikola Spasić. Behind the bank is the hotel Kod Jelena which Queen Natalija sold to the Serbian state in the early 20th century because the directorate of the State Railways had been there since the introduction of railways in 1884. Although it was well-built, with a monumental stairway and corridors paved with stone blocks, and also of a great cultural and historical importance, the building was needlessly demolished in 1932.
