  The Terazije Quarter

Terazije — the focus of Belgrade — spreads over the peak of the Sava ridge. In the early 19th century it was just an uninhabited plain on the Kragujevac road. Terazije got its name after a water supply device, i.e. a tower-shaped water tank which was situated near the present-day location of Terazijska česma (drinking water well) and which was used for gathering and distributing water. On the route of the Mokri Lug water supply system there used to be two more smaller devices of this kind, on the locations of today’s Russian Tsar and Greek Queen cafés.

In the mid 1930s Belgrade was beginning to look like a real metropolis. It was all lit by the shining and colourful advertisements, especially during holidays. The Terazije fountain was also lit, which left a pleasant impression on the passers-by.
