In this monumental equestrian sculpture, Prince Mihailo holds the reins in his left hand, which represents the gesture of ruler’s power and symbolises the ability to rule and lead. His raised right hand with the extended index finger is taken from the Roman tradition where it is understood as the reflection of gentleness, or mercy, and it alludes that Prince Mihailo was not a victor on a battlefield, but sought success through diplomacy.
Theatre Street was renamed to French Street, to show gratitude for the highest French military medal — a knight’s cross of Légion d’honneur — which was awarded to Belgrade in 1921. The medal was awarded by General Franchet d’Espérey. Apart from Belgrade, only Paris and Liège received the same medal by that time.
